Coaching material converges on a one-to-ten scale, where one is barely holding the paddle and ten is a death grip. It is not a measurement, it is a shared vocabulary: it lets a coach say a number instead of a paragraph, and lets a player check themselves mid-rally without stopping.
The numbers vary between sources, and that is honest
Published recommendations for a dink range from around two to around five depending on who is teaching. That spread is not a contradiction: hand size, paddle weight and how much a player sweats all move the answer. Treat any single number as a starting point to calibrate from rather than a target to hit.
It changes across a rally
The same player does not hold at one value all point. Soft shots — dinks, resets, drops — sit at the low end. Volleys and blocks need enough firmness that the paddle does not turn on contact. Drives and overheads sit highest. Holding one pressure through all of them is the most common technical simplification, and it costs feel on the soft shots.
Why a tight grip costs you
Squeezing stiffens the hand and forearm, which makes the ball rebound further than intended. On a dink, where the margin is a few centimetres over the net, that difference is the shot. A softer hold lets the ball stay on the face marginally longer, which is what players describe as feel.
Fingers, not palm
Holding the paddle deep in the palm reduces wrist mobility and makes fast adjustments harder. Coaching material consistently points to holding it more in the fingers. If it fatigues during short rallies, or feels tight when you finish playing, you are probably holding firmly through the whole point rather than only at contact. A second check: if the paddle feels heavy by the third game, pressure is a likelier cause than the paddle.
Pressure is usually a symptom
People squeeze when something does not inspire confidence. A worn contact surface, a handle too thin for the hand, or a starting position that keeps drifting all produce the same reflex. Telling a player to relax rarely works on its own, because the reason they are tensing has not changed.
What to fix before the grip itself
Rule out the cheap causes first: replace a saturated overgrip, check the handle circumference against your hand, and confirm your hand is arriving in the same place each shot. Those three are quick and measurable. Working on relaxation while any of them is unresolved is working against the reason.
The toothpaste image, and why it works
The cue coaches repeat is holding a tube of toothpaste: firm enough that it does not slip, light enough that nothing squirts out.
